Static Groups — You're in Full Control

A Static Group is exactly what it sounds like: you pick the animals, and they stay in the group until you move them. Think of it like a physical pen. Nothing walks in or out unless you open the gate.

Static groups are perfect when you need to hand-pick a specific set of cattle and keep them locked in together — regardless of what changes on their records down the road.

Common uses for static groups:

• Calving groups (Spring / Fall): Create a "Spring 2026 Calving" group and add your spring calvers as you identify them. As calving wraps up, the group stays intact as a record of that season — great for comparing year-over-year performance.
• Cull groups: Building a cull list throughout the year? Create a "2026 Culls" static group and add animals as you make cull decisions. When it's time to haul, your list is already built.
• Sale lots: Hand-pick the steers or heifers you plan to sell together. Having them in a group makes it easy to review weights, pull reports, and run market intelligence on the lot as a whole.
• Working pen groups: Sort a batch of animals for processing — vaccinations, pregnancy checks, or branding. The group tracks exactly who was in that session.
• Pen or pasture groups: Mirror your physical setup. Create groups like "North Pasture" or "Pen 3" and move animals between them as you rotate.

Smart Groups — Let the Software Do the Work

A Smart Group takes a different approach. Instead of hand-picking animals, you define a set of filter criteria, and Cattle360 automatically includes every animal that matches. When an animal's data changes and it no longer fits the criteria, it drops out on its own. When a new animal matches, it's added automatically.

• All active calves: Set the criteria to Status = Active and Type = Calf, and every calf in your herd is automatically in the group.
• Bred cows: Filter for Status = Active, Type = Cow, and Breeding Status = Pregnant. As you record pregnancy check results, cows flow in and out of this group automatically.
• Open cows (cull candidates): Filter for cows with Breeding Status = Open after breeding season.
• Calves born this spring: Use a Birth Date Range filter combined with Type = Calf.
• Animals by sire: Filter by a specific sire to see all of his progeny in one place.
• Purchased cattle: Filter for Purchased = Yes to keep a running view of every animal you've bought rather than raised.

The real power shows up when you use both types side by side. Static groups capture your decisions — the animals you've chosen to group together on purpose. Smart groups capture your reality — what's actually happening in the herd right now based on the data.

Tips to Get the Most Out of Groups

• Show your most-used groups on the Dashboard. Toggle "Show on Dashboard" when creating or editing a group, and it appears as a card on your main dashboard with a live animal count.
• Use descriptive names with the year. "Culls" is fine, but "2026 Culls" is better.
• Start smart groups simple. One or two criteria is usually enough.
• Move animals between static groups instead of removing and re-adding. Cattle360's Move feature does both steps at once.
• An animal can be in multiple groups at once. Groups aren't exclusive.
